2023.42 Blue Screen of Death

On Monday, November 13th 2023, Rivian started rolling out the over-the-air update 2023.42. Within a few hours of the rollout beginning, owners started experiencing problems with installation failing and resulting in a non-functional driver display and center display. Below you can find a timeline of events which will be updated as updates come out.


01:43 PM ET – Wednesday, November 15th 2023
  • Rivian has sent out an official communication informing impacted owners that 2023.42.02 will be rolled out via an over-the-air update to resolve the issues. The owner does not need to do anything at this time other than ensure notifications are enabled on the Rivian mobile app to make sure you get notified when the update is available later today. Wassym confirmed that about 3% of the fleet was impacted by this installation failure. (source)
10:00 PM ET – Tuesday, November 14th 2023
  • Wassym took to Reddit once more to inform owners that a follow-up email was sent to owners who were impacted by this. He stated that the Rivian team has build a solution that will be rolled out tomorrow. Fingers crossed it is an OTA or patch instead of a service center appointment. (source)
08:40 PM ET – Tuesday, November 14th 2023
  • Rivian has sent out a follow-up email stating that they have a solution and are working on the next steps on how to roll it out to impacted owners. More information to follow on Wednesday morning. Rivian assured us that the vehicles are safe to drive. (source)

  • Rivian has sent out an official SMS communication to those who were affected by the 2023.42.0 failed installation (source)
02:30 PM ET – Tuesday, November 14th 2023
  • Wassym provided a third update on his Reddit post on r/Rivian explaining the issue was identified and that it impacts the updated infotainment system on select R1 vehicles. Impacted owners received an email and SMS communication. The team continues actively working on the best solution to fix the impacted vehicles. (source)
01:43 PM ET – Tuesday, November 14th 2023
  • Rivian communicated via email stating that Rivian identified an issue with our recent software update 2023.42.0 that impacts your vehicle’s infotainment system. Rivian is actively working on a solution and will keep you updated with the next steps. In most cases, the rest of your vehicle systems remain functional, and you can continue to operate your Rivian. You also continue to have access to the convenience features found in your Rivian app like lock and unlock, climate control, closures control, and more. (source)
12:37 PM ET – Tuesday, November 14th 2023
  • Jose from RivianTrackr joins Kyle from Out of Spec on a podcast to discuss the nightmare happening with Rivian’s 2023.42 release and what could be done to resolve it. (source)

  • Wassym provided an update on his Reddit post on r/Rivian explaining this issue impacts the infotainment system and in most cases the rest of the vehicle systems are operational. A vehicle reset or sleep cycle will not resolve the issue. The Rivian team at this time is validating the best options to address the issue. (source)

  • RivianTrackr reports that the 2023.42 update has been stopped and no new vehicles should be getting it. (source)
09:59 PM ET – Monday, November 13th 2023
  • Wassym, Vice President Of Software Development at Rivian, took to Reddit on r/Rivian to share that they had made an error with 2023.42. The release had the wrong security certificates when sent out and Rivian had canceled the campaign. Service will be contacting impacted customers to help go through resolution options. Wassym explained this was on them and they had messed up. (source)
09:39 PM ET – Monday, November 13th 2023
  • RivianTrackr shares a video on social media explaining that while the 2023.42 update failed, the vehicle can still be shifted into gear, backup cameras show up, and various other functions work. The infotainment screen is stuck in a boot loop and won’t ever load content. Adaptive Cruise Control and Driver+ are non-functional. (source)
09:32 PM ET – Monday, November 13th 2023
  • RivianTrackr reports that the installation on his R1T failed to install. The vehicle reports that 2023.42 is installed the mobile app says it couldn’t install and to contact Rivian support. Various other owners are reporting the same thing. (source)

  • RivianTrack reports that Rivian has potentially stopped rolling out the update due to an issue with it getting stuck at 90% installation. (source)

  • RivianTrackr and various other owners reported that the update was getting stuck at 90% with no progress made for well over 1 hour in some cases. (source)
